Makini Chisolm-Straker, MD, MPH, is a Co-Founder and Advisory Council Member of HEAL Trafficking. Dr. Chisolm-Straker is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; she works clinically at Mount Sinai Brooklyn. Since 2005, Dr. Chisolm-Straker conducts original research at the intersection of health and human trafficking in the US; educates healthcare providers on how to identify and treat this patient population; and trains advocates and not-for-profit organizations on human trafficking and the latest research in the field. Dr. Chisolm-Straker served on the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Technical Working Group for the SOAR initiative, to develop an educational program for practitioners that serve trafficked persons. She now delivers SOAR trainings as a National Human Trafficking Training and Technical Assistance Center consultant. Recognizing the import of child protection as one mechanism of trafficking prevention and intervention, Dr. Chisolm-Straker sat on the Advisory Board of ECPAT-USA; works with Covenant House New Jersey and developed a validated, comprehensive trafficking screening tool for use among homeless young adults; and helped pilot a unique method of enumerating unaccompanied and separated children in emergency settings with Columbia University/CPC researchers and Save the Children. She has worked clinically, administratively, and as a consultant all over the world, and volunteers at the Libertas Center for Human Rights in Queens, New York, providing medical affidavits for those seeking asylum in the United States.
