Pungky Sumadi graduated from the Department of Economics at the University of Indonesia in 1986. In 2004, he earned his Ph.D. in community development from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Illinois-Champign. From 2005-2007, he worked as the Director of Poverty Reduction at BAPPENAS in Indonesia. He was the team leader to improve the design and expand the coverage of the Urban Poverty Project and Kecamatan Development Program. The two programs are currently known as the National Program of Community Empowerment (PNPM).
Currently, he is the Director of Social Protection and Welfare at BAPPENAS. His assignments are to improve the design and implementation of social assistance programs (for the elderly, children, and those with disabilities), and to expand the social security system in Indonesia.
